coat of arms
noun phrase
- a special shield or shield-shaped pattern which is the sign of a family, university or city
---
Individual coats of arms are not as common in Europe as they once were. But they are still used by people with royal heritage as well as states, cities and universities.

The ex-Beatle has been granted his own coat of arms which uses a crest in honour of his Liverpudlian background and musical career. It features a Liver Bird, holding a guitar to highlight McCartney's Liverpool and musical connections
Sir Paul also made reference to his fellow Beatles - John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr - by having four curved emblems that resemble beetles' backs.
