---
Drag racing gained popularity in the USA after World War II, growing in popularity and spreading across the globe. By 2009, there were hundreds of drag strips in operation, mainly in developed countries.
Most drag races begin with a stationary start and are just 1/4 mile long, or around 400 metres. Races last between 3.9 and 17 seconds, with finishing speeds ranging from 130 km/h to more than 530 km/h, depending upon the type of vehicle. As of July 2009, the world record for a 1/4-mile standing start was 4.428 seconds set by Tony Schumacher at Pomona, California.
Because they are so fast, many dragsters, which is how the cars are referred to, have parachutes installed on the rear to help slow them down. Top fuel dragsters, the fastest category, produce around 7,000 horsepower, which is around 37 times the average automobile. In addition, they leave the starting line with a force nearly five times that of gravity, the same force of the space shuttle when it launches.
