Did you know?
give s/o a warm hand
phrase
- to give someone a round of applause or to make him/her feel welcome
---
WORD ORIGIN
Contrary to what one might think, the expression "give a warm hand" does not stem from getting a warm hand from passionately clapping while applauding. The answer is simpler, and not quite as clever. Among other things, warm means "friendly, kind, enthusiastic" etc. To give someone a warm hand simply means to applaud someone with enthusiasm in order to make them feel welcome.
The expression is typically used when introducing entertainers, speakers and presenters. It has various forms such as:
- give him a warm welcome
- give him a round of applause/give him a big round of applause
- let's hear it for…(insert name)
- give it up for (insert name)! (a modern version frequently used by young people in the entertainment business in the United States)
Instead of give, the phrase is sometimes written or expressed with extend, such as:
"Chile extends India warm hand, offers trade agreement" or "Egypt extends warm welcome to Obama." Extend is used in the sense of reaching out, or extending, one's hand in a gesture of friendship.
Fulton J. Sheen, an American bishop of the Roman Catholic Church and a popular preacher and speaker, had a humorous perspective on "getting a warm hand." Once at an inter-faith rally in Baltimore, Maryland, he was welcomed with wild applause. He raised a hand, waited for the crowd to become quiet and began his speech: "When you applaud me at the start, that's faith; when you applaud midway through, that's hope. But, ah, my dear friends, if you applaud me at the end, that will be charity!"
